Reclamation project in Saemangeum
페이지 정보

본문
The government decided to go ahead with the controversial reclamation project in Saemangeum. Environmentalists and civic groups immediately vowed to launch an all-out campaign against what they called a "destructive" decision. Under the decision, which came after two years of research and discussion on the feasibility of the project, the government will resume the construction of a 33km sea-wall off the West coast of the area.
There are two aspects in this project, the Environmentalists insist importance of Saemangum tidal flats. Saemangum is a healthy and productive wildlife habitat. It supports 158 species of fish, 76.9% of all fish species found in the West Sea. It also supports a large fishing industry and provides the country's supply of Asian hard clam. Saemangum tidal flat has recently been recognised as the main water bird stopover in South Korea. Over 20,000 shore birds stopover here as they move along the East Asia-Australian flying way from Australia to Siberia during spring and summer. In 1998, more than 85,000 birds were recorded at Saenamgum.
But the approvers to this project insist we have to believe that clean water could be secured in the reservoir, unlike Sihwa Lake. In particular, there are no industrial sites near the lake in North Jolla Province. This will also give sufficient water to the residents, who are expected to suffer from a severe shortage in the near future. We also think that, thanks to the project, the nation's land could be expanded, more rice could be produced to improve the self-sufficiency of foodstuffs, the reservoir would prevent floods and high tidal waves and the project would create new mud flats. All of these would outweigh the benefits of leaving the tidal land intact. And North Cholla residents regard as their last boon. North Cholla Province is one of the poorest regions as it has few income sources.
Q1) Let's think about the merits and demerits of reclamation.
Q2) Do you agree on this project or not?
Q3) Environment is very important but the economic development is also important in our life. How can we make the balance between two of them?
Q4) What do you think about our country's environment? What kinds of problems are there? Have you ever done something for our environment? What can we do for the protection of environment?
