Dealing with stress
페이지 정보

본문
Many people in advanced countries claim that they suffer from stress. Such people usually do almost everything fast, from driving fast to gulping down their food at meals. Eating too fast is a major cause of stomach problems and poor digestion of food.
When asked how they deal with stress, most young people will answer that they go for a walk whenever they have the chance or take part in some kind of sports. That's good, because studies have shown that physical exercise is one of the best methods for relieving the pressures of everyday life.
Another method of relieving stress which has been popular around the world since the late 1960s is meditation. A lot of research has shown that meditation reduces stress.
Unfortunately, most people don't seem to have enough time to sit and meditate for 20 minutes twice, or even once, a day.
But a crowded schedule may no longer be a good excuse. There is another form of meditation which doesn't require setting aside a special time to do it. It's called mindfulness, and it can be done anywhere and at any time.
Mindfulness is based on the 2,500-year-old Buddhist tradition of meditation. Now it is
becoming popular in western countries also, as Buddhist teachers have been spreading the news about its effectiveness.
Mindfulness is a form of meditation that emphasizes paying attention from moment to moment. Like regular forms of meditation, it also requires a lot of concentration, but you can use whatever activity you happen to be doing at the moment. You can be thinking of what someone is saying, or you can be jogging, dancing, even driving a car.
In other words, you just concentrate on whatever you are doing at the time, without letting your mind wander.
The benefits of mass-meditation: In 1988 the director of a British meditation center in
Merseyside, England wanted to prove that if enough people within an area meditate, it can have a calming effect on the entire population.
Merseyside had the 3rd highest crime rate in England, so with the cooperation of the local police, the center persuaded hundreds of people to meditate. By 1992 the national crime rate had risen 45%, but the crime rate in Merseyside fell 13% to become the lowest crime rate in England. The experiment seemed to prove that meditation really
works.
Q1) Do you have much stress in your life? If so, what are the main causes of your stress?
Q2) What do toy think about meditation or mindfulness as a stress reducer? Do you know anyone who uses meditation to reduce his or her stress?
Q3) How much effect do you think that exercise and sports have on reducing stress? And
