As Hwang Su-jeong, one of the most popular actresses in the country, was arrested on charges of illegal use of methamphetamine, more commonly known as philopon in Korea, companies whose commercials feature Hwang are facing an emergency as they have decided to discontinue current advertisement campaigns and are seeking replacements for Hwang. The 31-year-old top actress has represented Lotte Department Store, Mamonde of Pacific Cosmetics, and Raemian Apartment of Samsung Corp. in commercials and her total modeling fees amount to some W740 million.
The three companies immediately suspended airing commercials featuring Hwang on TV and newspapers and removed advertisement posters from subways and buses after the arrest was reported on. A personnel member at Lotte said that the contract states that if the model becomes involved in an incident that arouses social criticism, such as drug abuse, adultery or business fraud, the contract will be nullified and Hwang will compensate the company an amount double the modeling fee, and Lotte is considering legal action according to the contract.
Hwang broke into stardom after appearing in the hit TV series Heo Jun last year and has been a top-rated model, also representing Jinro and BC Card until recently.
Following the arrest of top actress Hwang Su-jeong for the use of methamphetamine, singer Psy has also been arrested, charged with smoking marijuana. Entertainment industry insiders are concerned that more drug-related arrests may follow. Celebrities who have spent time in foreign countries are apparently uneasy about the news since the list of previously charged stars include Lee Hyeon-u, Sin Hae-cheol, Sin Dong-yeop, Uptown and Gang San-e, all of whom have spent time abroad. As the use of marijuana is viewed more liberally in countries like the US, stars with international experience are the targets of speculation.
Broadcasters concerns that their own reputations could be tarnished if celebrities featured on their networks are charged for the use of illegal substances. Ha Seung-bo, a producer of “Name of Rose,” a show on SBS, said that if a star who is appearing on a series or a show is charged with narcotics use, the show itself will be affected by through the decline of its public image and popularity.
As the Seoul Broadcasting System had prepared a special comeback stage for Psy in time for the release of Psy’s second record, his appearance has been replaced by other singers at the last minute. In addition, MBC and KBS are also perplexed as they too had planned on casting Psy on their shows.
However, while the entertainment industry agrees on a thorough crackdown on such drug abuse, insiders were not happy over the speculations and rumors with no solid evidence. One owner of a celebrity management agency objected to criticism that the entire industry is rife with drug use.
Q1. Why were most of us so surprised at the news that actress Hwang Su-Jeong was on drugs? The other way, if you weren't surprised that much, why is that?
Q2. Why do some entertainers become addicted to drug more easily than us?
Q3. Do you think they(entertainers who took drug) have to be punished more severely than others who were on drugs, because they're public man everyone knows?
Q4. If you given a chance to take drug, do you have a mind to take that opportunity?
( Speak frankly ! ^ ^ )
