In an effort to raise national awareness of gender equality issues, Gender Equality Minister Han Myung-sook unveiled the charter, which outlines the goals and guidelines the ministry envisions Korean society should pursue to realize true equality between the sexes. Believing that the goals of the new charter mean greater independence and improved social status for women, the ministry hopes the charter will help bring its message of gender equality and equal rights closer to the nation.
According to an official of the ministry, a similar charter existed in the past, but it focused on the protection of women's rights rather than advocating gender equality.
The charter, among other things, calls for equal civil and political rights, equal share of roles and responsibilities between husbands and wives, and equal opportunities for women to participate in economic activities based on their abilities.
Women's Week, from July 1 to 7 every year, is aimed at promoting pan-national public awareness of the significance of gender equality.
This year's Women's Week represented the latest effort by the Ministry of Gender Equality to promote women's issues, particularly to improve the status of women and realize full gender equality. It was the first Women's Week since the Ministry of Gender Equality became an independent ministry from a special presidential committee for women on Feb. 26 this year. Government agencies and private organizations hosted a variety of events to mark the annual event, which began in 1996, with much weight put on public relations for goals designed to enhance women's equality.
