Transportation in the Cities
페이지 정보

본문
Taxis are supposed to be the ultimate in convenience in inner-city transportation for people who are in a hurry. Considering that their fares are much higher than buses or subways, people expect them to take them wherever they want to go more quickly and in the most comfortable way possible.
That may be the way it works in most places around the world, but unfortunately, in Korea, that's not the way it is. In a recent survey of Seoul residents, over 90% complained about the poor service which they had received from taxi drivers. The most common complaint given by foreigners visiting Korea was that they were cheated or received rude treatment from taxi drivers.
Here are some of the complaints most often mentioned about Korean taxi drivers:
*"THEY DRIVE TOO FAST."
Customers are paying for a safe and comfortable ride. They don't expect to be racing around the city streets hanging on for dear life.
*"THEY DRIVE RECKLESSLY."
Weaving in and out of traffic lanes wildly makes passengers want to stop and get out.
*"THEY BREAK TRAFFIC LAWS."
Passengers who are used to obeying the law feel very uncomfortable about driving through red lights.
*"THEY WON'T PICK US UP."
Some taxi drivers are afraid to pick up foreigners because they(taxi drivers) think the foreigners won't be able to speak Korean. This leaves a very bad impressions of Korea on the visitors.
*"THEY REFUSE TO TAKE US WHERE WE WANT TO GO."
One reason for using a taxi is to be able to go where buses or subways can't take you. So if a person can't go by bus, subway, or taxi, there's no way to get there!
*"HE OVERCHARGED US."
Some taxi drivers try to take advantage of foreigners who don't know what the fares should be. They turn off the meter and charge whatever they want.
*"THEY PICKED UP OTHER PASSENGERS AND MADE THEM RIDE WITH US." This practice, called '합승'in Korean, is strange to foreigners. They can't understand why total strangers are riding in their taxi.
For years, taxi companies have been trying to 'clean up' their image by disciplining their drivers, but the problem doesn't stop. Many people in the Korean tourism industry
think that poor taxi service is one reason why fewer foreign tourists have been coming to Korea.
Q1) What do you think of the taxi service in Korea? Is it excellent, satisfactory, or poor?
Explain your opinion.
Q2) Have you ever had an unpleasant experience with a taxi driver in Korea? If so, what happened?
Q3) Have you ever taken a taxi in a foreign country? If so, how was the taxi service-better or worse than in Korea?
Q4) Do you think there is any connection between the taxi service and the number of foreigners who visit the country?
Explain your opinion.
