Too many boys
페이지 정보

본문
A few years ago, it first became known that the number of boys being born in Korea was starting to outnumber the number of girls being born. It was the result of medical advancements which now make it possible for doctors to determine the sex of the unborn fetus long before birth.
Of course, it is natural that parents expecting a baby are curious to know whether they'll be getting a son or a daughter. But in Korea, there is a much more sinister purpose to this sex-determination procedure, and it goes far beyond pure curiosity. It is to make sure that the baby will be a boy and not a girl. Fetuses which are found out to be female are often aborted.
This practice which is caused by the age-old Korean tradition of favoring boys over girls is now threatening to turn into a big social problem just a few years from now. If nothing is done to stop the trend, Korean society will soon be changed forever.
In 1997 the ratio of boys to girls in some Korea elementary schools was almost two boys to every girl. Sociologist warned of an coming social disaster. Koreans apparently started to heed their warnings, because by 2001 the situation improved to about 109 boys being born for every 100 girls. While this was an improvement, it was still not enough to solve the problem.
The situation is the same on China, actually even worse. In 2000 about 111 boys were being born for every 100 girls, but in some provinces the ratio was as high as 130 to 100. As a result, demographers predicted that there would be about 50 million Chinese men unable to find wives by 2020.
Some people have suggested that foreign women could be imported to fill the demand for brides, but most Koreans are too nationalistic to be content to become a mixed race of people.
Another potential problem for Korea men looking for wives is that more and more Korean women are choosing to remain single longer. It's a direct result of the better educational opportunities now available to women.
This has produced a generation of educated young women who are unwilling to give up professional careers in order to become housewives in a sexiest society where women are expected to serve the men.
Q1) Since everyone knows it is possible to find out the unborn baby's sex, do you think it is possible for the government to prevent it, or is it impossible to stop? Why or why not?
Q2) If Korean and Chinese men cannot find women from their own countries to marry, what should they do?
-Import a foreign woman to marry
-Marry a foreign woman but live in HER country
-Remain single
-Allow women to have more than one husband
-Another solution, Explain
Q3) Would you ever consider marrying a foreigner? Would you mind if your son or daughter married a foreigner? why or why not?
Q4) How will Korea change if many Koreans begins to marry foreigners in the future? How will the character of Koreans be different from now?
