Credit Card Debtors Turning To Crime
페이지 정보

본문
As of the end of August, 3.41 million people failed to meet their debt obligations worth more than 300,000 won ($260) for three months or longer, according to the Korea Federation of Banks.
The number represents 7 percent of the nation`s 48-million-strong population and was up 1.98 percent from a month earlier, the slowest monthly growth seen since November.
"The rate is far shy of the average monthly increase rate of 3.47 percent between January and July," the banks` association noted.
A noticeable component of August`s figures was that the number of teenagers in arrears declined 0.94 percent from a month before to stand at 6,141. Analysts attributed the first drop of this year for this segment mainly to moves by credit-card issuers and lenders not to extend credit to those under the age of 20.
The highest growth rate was seen in the number of female defaulters in their 30s, which rose 3.36 percent to hit 367,083 by the end of last month.
The largest proportion of total delinquents, 1.07 million people or 31.6 percent, were men in their 40s or older.
Coming in second were men in their 30s, who made up 19.05 percent of the delinquents, followed by women aged 40 or more at 18.7 percent, men in their 20s at 10.61 percent and women in their 20s at 9.09 percent.
Of August`s new entrants into the credit-watch list, 81 percent, or 53,690 people, were behind on their credit-card payments, while others held overdue bills from banks, insurers and other institutions. Nearly two-third of the total delinquents, or 2.12 million people, missed making payments on cash advances and purchases made on credit cards.
Crimes related to credit cards totaled 2,434 as of the end of July, up 21 percent from the same period last year. This number averaged 11.5 crimes per day, or one crime committed every two hours.
