Nearly one out of every 10 couples standing in front of the wedding altar in Korea today is saying “I do” in a different language. That is because international marriages for Koreans have drastically increased in recent years. Koreans pride themselves in the unbroken 5,000 years of history of their homogeneous population.
The latest data of the National Statistical Office (NSO) revealed that 25,658 Koreans tied the knot in the country with foreigners last year. It was reported that interracial marriages took up 8.4% out of a total of 3,049,000 registered marriages in 2003.
The interracial marriages in 2003 have been increased by 61% compared with that of the previous year. The outstanding features of the current interracial marriage is that the number of Korean men, who are seeking foreign women to marry, than before.
The statistics of NSO revealed that 6,444 Korean women married foreign men last year. Out of them, Japanese men were the top choice of husbands. Over 40%, equivalent to 2,613 Korean women, took on Japanese spouses, while 1,237 Korean women married Americans. The third most popular race Korean women chose was Chinese, with 1,199 tying the knot. Following in order are Canadian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Australian, and German male spouses.
This statistical data indicated obviously that Japanese and American men are the two top choices for foreign husbands and most of Korean women who choose interracial marriages either want someone very similar or someone completely different from their own kind.
However, the situation is very different for Korea’s male population. Korean male population seems to prefer Asian foreign spouses. NSO’s statistical data also show that 19,214 Korean men were registered in interracial marriage last year. Out of them, a whopping 69.6%, equivalent to 13,373 Korean men, took on Chinese wives, while 1,403 Korean men tied the knot with Vietnamese women and only 1,242 Korean men married Japanese women. Filipino women were in fourth place followed by Thai, Uzbek, Mongolian, and Russian.
Experts credit the trend to the increasing number of Korean men in rural farming regions who are taking on foreign wives, as the average ratio between male and female in those areas has been declining drastically and most of Korean women do not want marry a farmer and as a result of that, there are not enough local Korean women to marry.
With its growing acceptance by locals today, interracial marriage has come a long way in Korean society and it is expected to continue growing in the coming years. But traditional attitudes of keeping a homogeneous race are still prevalent. Even so, there is a growing number of Koreans with independent minds and passion, who are going to find their sole mate outside their own nationality.
Given this kind of thinking, if the trend continues for a few more years in this largely conservative and homogeneous society, its people will learn to understand truly that love can reach beyond the borders of race and ethnicity.
