Culture Virginity Pledges
페이지 정보

본문

For about a decade now, a surprising number of large organisations (such as ‘True Love Waits’ and “The Silver Ring Thing”) around the world have embarked on significant efforts to encourage young people not to have sex. In some countries these campaigns have had the explicit support of the government and have even benefited from state funding. As part of these programmes, youths are encouraged to make a verbal or written promise to abstain from sex until marriage. These pledges are known as virginity pledges. By 1995 at least 2.5 million people had made them; the figure is probably closer to 10 million now.
Underlying the controversy over whether virginity pledges ‘work’, is the controversy over what objective virginity pledges should be working towards. The topic also links closely to related arguments about sex education, the age of consent, state funding for family planning advice and contraception, and about the prevention of HIV/AIDS.
Virginity is worth keeping.
It is dangerous to have sex before marriage. It may be called love but it can still
leave both physical and mental damage.
As you know, there have been many teenage pregnancies lately. A young person
has sex with a friend of the opposite sex, and the girl gets pregnant. A baby is ev
-entually born... This is a very irresponsible act.
Experiencing lovemaking once or twice before marriage will probably lead to several
more sexual encounters. And the thought that it is OK to sleep around may grow
in one`s mind. I doubt that such a person will be able to commit to a marriage later on.
Meanwhile, it is wrong for virginity to be forced only upon women. Men must keep
their virginity, too. If a man doesn't keep his virginity, yet insists that his girlfriend keep
hers, it is a very selfish and contradictory act.
There is no such thing as uncontrollable sexual desire. Human beings can always
control themselves. It is right to have sex only when one can be mentally and
emotionally mature and completely responsible for the other person. And that is only
possible through marriage.
What is virginity?
I think we should think again about the meaning of 'virginity.'
What is virginity? Not having sex before marriage? The opposite word of 'virginity' is
'filthiness.' If someone has had sexual experience before marriage, are they filthy? I don`t
think so.
Let's say a female student is raped by a sick subhuman monster. Is that student filthy?
We only think of virginity as something physical. But more important are the concepts of
"mental virginity" and "virginity after marriage."
In our country, sex is not something foul. If one has a strong emotional and mental
commitment to love, and can be responsible for their own actions, the physical act of
love can be a very beautiful one.
But this is different for teenagers. Teenagers are sometimes mentally immature.
They are not capable of taking responsibility for themselves and their partners.
I therefore believe that it is wrong for a teenager to become sexually active.
More than man, women are forced to keep their virginity. We know that it is unfair,
but in Korea it is treated as a rule. To man, virginity is really generous. They don't
have to keep their virginity, more than that they proud of their sexual experience.
They can find partner for their sexual instinct if they have money. This situation is
treated as a normal thing. Why virginity is emphasized especially to woman?
