Culture 'Blackout' Hits 35% of Working Women

According to the hospital‘ survey of 170 working women in their 20s to 50s who drink alcohol, 35 percent say they blacked out due to binge drinking and 34 percent say they drink excessively more than once a month.
In fact, four percent say they experience blackout on a regular basis, which raises awareness on women’s drinking habits.
Regular blackout is one of the early symptoms of chronic drinking. If one drinks more than one bottle of soju or more than four bottles of beer on a regular basis, one is already seen by specialists as having an alcoholic problem and is in need of treatment.
Also, 30 percent of those surveyed found their working lives affected by hangovers such as being late for, or even absent from work. Another 37 percent say they drink alone due to stress at work.
Recent studies suggest women have fewer alcohol metabolizing enzymes than men. The fact that women typically have more body fat also causes them to metabolize alcohol differently. This means that a woman will have a higher blood alcohol concentration level than a man, despite consuming the same amount of alcohol, which might explain why women seem less tolerant of alcohol than men.
Women become addicted to alcohol faster than men once they start drinking, and are more likely to suffer from alcohol-related diseases including osteoporosis, dementia and depression. Also, women’s death rate from such diseases is more than twice that of men.
``Although men drink much more than women in general, the fact that there is an increasing number of women experiencing blackout and drinking on a regular basis is quite worrisome, as they are more vulnerable to the aftereffects of drinking than men,’’ said Lee Jong-sub, a doctor at Dasarang Central Hospital. ``Those who suffer from the aftereffects of bad drinking habits are advised to consult an expert as soon as possible.’’
