The finding lent credence to the prevailing perception that money is key to admission to prestigious schools these days. In the 1970s, there was little correlation between family income and admission to top-class schools.
SNU has analyzed the income distribution of new students’ families based on the amount of money that 1,463 students paid for health insurance. This is the first time that the school has surveyed an income-level of students’ family. As the government imposes individual household health insurance fees depending on income level, the results could be reliable data, an SNU spokesman said.
Children from the top 20 percent income bracket represented almost 60 percent of freshmen students, 2.8 percent of them are from the bottom 10 percent bracket, the report said. Meanwhile, 1.3 percent of them are under the government’s livelihood assistance program.
Currently, 1.01 million won in monthly health insurance premiums is the figure representing the top 10 percent income bracket and 14,000 won for the bottom 10 percent. The income level also showed big gaps according to the students’ majors. The college of veterinary medicine had the biggest number of students from the top 10 percent income bracket with 56 percent.
The college of business administration came next with 46.2 percent, followed by the colleges of law and fine arts with 45.5 percent and 42.1 percent, respectively.
In contrast, college of medicine has the smallest number of students from the top 10 percent income group with 12 percent.
``Our study also shows that parents’ incomes influence their children’s school achievement,’’ a researcher at the Korea Educational Development Institute said. ``The school needs to grant a larger admission quota for students from low-income bracket to remove educational polarization.’’
Meanwhile, some SNU students questioned the accuracy of the survey. ``It is natural that incomes of parents who have university students are higher than other groups because of their job careers,’’ Oh Jeong-ik, an SNU student said. ``If they want to generalize that many SNU students are from high-income bracket, they have to compare SNU with other universities.’’
