Philosophy Asian Students Have Different Life Objectives

The objective of Korean youth is ``having fun in life’’ while their American, Japanese and Chinese counterparts want to ``create a good family,’’ find ``life-long friends’’ and ``get rich’’ respectively. The finding was made public after the Japan Youth Research Center conducted a survey last October to December of 5,676 middle and high school students in Korea, the United States, Japan and China dealing with teenagers’ ambitions and desires.
The Korean adolescents said that they want to enjoy their lives but American students replied they would like to raise a good family. Meanwhile, the Japanese said that they would like to have many friends, and the Chinese expressed their hope to become rich.
However, when asked what they would like to achieve in their youth, Korean students were more eager to ``find life-long friends,’’ ``find a good spouse,’’ and ``make money’’ than the non-Korean students. The survey showed that Korean students lacked independence and positive thinking about working hard and getting the best out of life.
On the question, ``Should you do your own work all by yourself?’’ About 18.5 percent of Koreans said yes, while 34.2 percent, 29.2 percent and 22.9 percent of Chinese, American and Japanese students, respectively, did. Koreans tended to show less of a will to learn or study. A mere 5. 8 percent of Koreans had part time jobs, compared to American’s 36.7 percent.
About 23 percent of Koreans and 19.6 percent of Japanese students said they hope to pursue their studies further, but 53.1 percent and 50.1 percent of American and Chinese students said they would like to do so. Not everyone said they would like to go to top-class universities. The Chinese showed the most passion with 37.8 percent, followed by Koreans with 28.5 percent, Americans with 24.7 percent and Japanese with 20.4 percent. However, it was the Americans who thought degrees from good universities guarantee a good career at 73.3 percent. Meanwhile, 62.3 percent of Chinese and 54 percent of Koreans thought so.
Teaching jobs were the most favored by Korean teenagers, while the Americans, Japanese and Chinese picked doctors, salespersons and managing directors, respectively.
