Opposition parties and media unions criticized the nominee for chairman of a newly established broadcasting board asserting his ties with President Lee Myung-bak will undermine the body's independece. It means, they accuse Lee of attempting to take control of the country's broadcasting sector by naming his close confidant Choi See-joong as head of the Broadcasting and Communications Commission. The commission is to be given significant authority in formulating policies for the country's broadcasting and communications sectors.
So, the main opposition United Democratic Party demanded President Lee withdraw the nomination. But Choi answered that his close relations with the president will not affect his job performance. In addition, The ruling Grand National Party countered by saying Choi's appointment is needed to balance the broadcasting industry that it alleged is leaning to the left following appointments by the previous two liberal governments, dismissing the UDP's neutrality concerns.(Yonhap News)
