Corporate donations, however, appeared to slacken as they are forced to operate on smaller budgets next year.
"Companies seem to have cut down on donations because of their tightened budgets, but individual donors are on the rise. Individuals were more eager to help out," said Yu Soo-kyung of the Community Chest of Korea, one of the country`s major charity foundations.
"This was definitely a surprise because we thought people would not be so willing to make donations considering the poor economic conditions."

Spending has declined sharply over the past few months in the wake of a global recession triggered by a housing and financial market collapse in the United States.
The Seoul government has consequently been forced to unleash emergency cross-board crisis measures to help companies cope with credit shortages and surging exchange rates.
Seoul also is growing more and more concerned about how a snowballing number of middle-class citizens are falling into the lowest income bracket.
Due to the sudden decrease in company donations, organizations like Community Chest have to seek other measures to secure enough donations, such as wooing more members for donation groups formed of wealthy social leaders, who usually give up to 100 million won ($68,000) at a time.
These personal donors would have to help prevent a possible monthly decline in December donations, Community Chest said.
In contrast, Goodneighbors, a top non-government organization taking mostly individual donations, said the volume of donations between January and October this year has increased over 30 percent compared to the same period last year.
Its data showed that personal donations took up over 90 percent of total volume, up from the 88 percent from last year. The average amount that people gave away also rose to 23,000 won ($15) from the previous 10,000 won.
Thanks to such an increase, the organization has already just about achieved its annual donation goal.
Even considering that December is an up-season for personal donations, people are definitely giving more to charity, said Yoon Bo-ae of the Goodneighbors` public relations office.
"It is almost like 10 years ago, amid the first financial crisis," she said. "People have said they are giving more to help out those who are suffering from the difficult times."
