THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY SHOULD TAKE A HARD-LINE APPROACH TOWARDS REGIME REFORM IN SYRIA

My vote goes to the Opposition side of the debate, mainly because the Proposition side did not provide with a comprehensive constructive case and did not engage at all with the arguments of the Opposition through refutation. Although the Proposition attempted to provide with the historical context in which Syria's current system of governance developed in, they did not sufficiently prove a necessity for intervention and they did not clarify which model of intervention they were seeking through their argumentation. Opposition sufficiently pointed out the flaws in the Proposition argument, exposing the lack of analysis that would prove their claims on political stability and economic development. Also, it was a large concession on the Proposition side that the situation is already improving, something that the Opposition side further exploited in their argumentation to show that developing a stable democracy is a time-consuming process that has already started in Syria. As far as the Opposition constructive is concerned, their elaboration on the reality in Syria and how difficult it would be to reconcile the different factions within the country after an intervention sufficiently illustrated the harms from Proposition's case, while they sufficiently showed how Syria, as far as it's internal situation is concerned, is not the only or even the worse case of humanitarian disaster through oppressive governance around the world, therefore there is no sufficient mandate for the international community to intervene in this case.

The Opposition team won this debate. Whilst the Proposition team made a reasonable start in convincingly identifying the historical and political impetus for a new approach, their characterisation of both the problem and the scope of their mechanism was not sufficiently explained, and important facets of context, necessity and practicability were glossed over. The team also suffered from the entire lack of engagement with any of the points made by the Opposition. The Opposition team's attack on the model was lucid and convincing. The team pointed out weaknesses such as the lack of logical linkage between elements of the problem laid out and the solution the Proposition team alluded to, such as the unsupported presumption that fair elections generate increased investment. In light of having limited constructive material from the Proposition team to address, the Opposition team offered a particularly strong case against the motion, marshalling 'even if' arguments very persuasively. Continuation of such lines of reasoning, taking the Proposition case at its strongest and offering an incisive and well-structured critique around the 'even if' formulation served the team well and is to be encouraged in further rounds. The Opposition team also offered excellent principled analysis of rights claims, which they linked very well to country-specific issues, such as the Emergency Law. The points of the Opposition team were logically structured and eloquently expressed, indeed the case overall and their performance is to be strongly commended. In terms of improvement for future rounds, using a greater quantity of (well-analysed) evidence could be a valuable support to an excellent principled stance.
